Deacon John

The Rev. Deacon Dr. John H. Hanson is a life-long Episcopalian. A graduate of the Diocese of New Jersey School of Deacons, he was ordained to the Diaconate in 2002 and serves as Chaplain for the Episcopal Campus Ministry at Rowan University. He served eight years as Archdeacon for Pastoral Care of Deacons in the diocese under retired Bishop George E. Councell.

Deacon Hanson is a veteran journalist and educator. He is a former section editor at the Asbury Park Press in Neptune, N.J. and reporter for the Syracuse (N.Y.) Herald Journal. A graduate of the University of Liberia, Hanson holds a master’s degree in journalism from Syracuse University and a Ph.D. in mass communication from Florida State University. He retired in December 2017 after teaching journalism for 18 years at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Vivian, have two daughters and five grandchildren.
